Groups are lists of contacts. You can create a Group (using the Add Group link on the navigation panel) and then assign as many people to the group as you like.

This is simply a way to work with a "group" of people. The Search/Select link on the navigation panel of the main Contacts screen is how you select which group you'd like to work with.
